Animal Aid

Animal Aid

warm welcome to our special guests!!

http://www.animalaid.org.uk/

Animal Aid is the UK's largest animal rights group and one of the longest established in the world, having been founded in 1977.

Animal Aid campaign peacefully against all forms of animal abuse and promote a cruelty-free lifestyle. They investigate and expose animal cruelty, and their undercover investigations and other evidence are often used by the media, bringing these issues to public attention.

Animal Aid works hard to protect animals across the UK, and they get results!

Animal Aid:

  • Played a central role in persuading the racing industry to make changes to its whip rules in 2011. Despite later revisions to these new rules, jockeys who breach the regulations can face stricter penalties – including forfeiture of winnings and riding bans lasting several months for extreme or repeat offenders. Our ten year campaign for a total ban on the whip in racing continues.
  • Convinced every single major UK supermarket to insist that their suppliers install independently monitored CCTV cameras in slaughterhouses. Aldi, Asda, the Co-op, Iceland, Lidl, Marks & Spencer, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Waitrose and wholesalers Booker have agreed to Animal Aid’s call for them to insist on their UK meat suppliers having independently monitored CCTV cameras in the stunning and slaughter (and shackling in the case of poultry) areas of their slaughterhouses. This will prevent some of the appalling brutality revealed by our undercover investigations. The law was being broken in seven out of the eight slaughterhouses in which we filmed. The victory follows a major campaign including a series of advertisements in national newspapers, putting pressure on the supermarkets to agree to Animal Aid's campaign demand.
  • Played the central role in stopping Cambridge University from building a massive primate testing facility
  • Helped reduce impulse purchases of pets, by stopping Focus DIY and Wyevale Garden Centres from selling animals (when current concessions expire), and persuading all leading supermarket chains to stop advertising pets for sale on their notice boards.
  • Obtained the first ever footage of horses being killed in UK slaughterhouses, and gained coverage of this in the Daily Mail.
  • Landed the shooting industry with a £20 million unpaid tax bill.
  • Stopped horses being sold for meat at Ascot horse sales.
  • Stopped Britain’s largest bird fair from taking place.
  • Blocked proposals for four reptile zoos.
  • Stopped local councils from culling birds.
  • Conducted undercover investigations into the shooting industry’s use of battery cages for breeding birds, forcing the leading pro-shoot lobby group to condemn such “horrific” conditions.
  • Went head to head with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons over our right to criticise vivisection… and won.
  • Submitted a dossier of evidence to the Advertising Standards Authority, who then ruled that shot pheasants cannot be described as organic.
  • Forced John Lewis to disband its shooting club and end the rearing and shooting of pheasants on its estate.
  • Stopped Oxford City Council introducing horse-drawn carriages in 2001.
  • Produced an anti-vivisection leaflet, A Crying Shame, which was the subject of a two hour GCSE English paper sat by more than 430,000 pupils.
  • Convinced several local Councils to implement their Compassionate Charter.

Animal Aid also:

  • Routinely carry out undercover investigations into factory farms, slaughterhouses, gamebird rearing operations, the horse racing industry and markets. The results have made headline news. A few examples are: a front page story in The Independent, showing the state of British pig farms; a lead story on Channel 5 news about “Freedom Food” farms; and a turkey farm exposé in The Sun.
  • Produce in-depth reports, factsheets and leaflets to support our campaigns
  • Lobby politicians
  • Offer a large range of ethical mail order goods including toiletries, clothes, chocolates and wine, through our online shop.
  • Give lectures on ethics and welfare to undergraduate and post-graduate equine science students.
  • Send out thousands of free education packs
  • Provide teaching resources free of charge to schools across the country.
  • Train volunteer school speakers who talk in more than 300 schools each year
  • Campaign online though viral films, podcasts and social networking websites
  • Stage Britain’s leading annual cruelty-free Christmas fair
