Anteneh Roba MD

Co-founder, President of the International Fund for Africa

Appearing on Sunday at the A Well-Fed World Global Food Sustainability Conference

Dr Roba is currently in private medical practice in Fairfax, Virginia.  His first initiation to the world of compassion started in 1999 when he adopted a 9 pound fur ball called Nikita, a Maltese dog who was given to him by his cousin.  Throughout the next few years Dr Roba's  relationship with Nikita opened doors to the much broader world of compassion which led to his visiting his homeland of Ethiopia in 2003, where he was exposed to suffering of both human and non human animals. One of his first encounters was in a hospital pediatric ward where he was exposed to babies dying of diseases that were treatable and preventable, walking the streets of the capital city he  saw animals being needlessly tortured, as they are elsewhere, he saw homeless little children and dogs  sleeping on concrete. When he returned to the United States he realized what his mission was in life, and the idea of the Amsale Gessesse Memorial Foundation was born later to be called ''The International Fund for Africa '', in memory of  his mother, Amsale Gessesse who died in 1961.

Dr Roba's extra-professional activities include promoting veganism, rescuing dogs, writing about nutrition and animal suffering, giving talks on subjects related to animal suffering and nutrition nationally and Internationally.

Dr Roba has contributed chapters to two books on health and compassion for animals and is in the midst of co-editing a new book that will come out soon called Africa and Her Animals.
