Tessa Dickinson (Population Matters) - Why Human Population Is An Animal Rights Issue

UK charity Population Matters provide a rarely heard focus on how human numbers greatly impact animal rights. Be it habitat loss, species extinction or increased demand for farmed animal exploitation, Population Matters show that this important issue is largely ignored in the movement.

2:00 - 2:25 - Dr. Roger Yates - How We Grow Up to Be Animal Loving Animal Users: The Sociology of Animal Harming

Every nursery and infant school in the land is festooned with pictures of “animal friends” -  wise old bears and friendly cows. Children seem to have an instinctive love and regard for other animals. So by what social processes do most of us grow up to use animals in the exploitative ways that we do: as if they are food, clothing, medical models, entertainment, for example?

This talk draws on sociology, psychology, and a bit of linguistics to explain how most humans grow up to be animal loving animal users.

2:30 - 2:55 - Dr. Roger Yates - Grassroots: the essential backbone of all radical social movements with a case study about the Dublin-based Vegan Information Project

Ask animal advocates and many will agree that a vibrant and strong grassroots movement is essential for the struggle for animal rights. However, do we give little more than lip service to the importance of the grassroots in the way we organise the structure of the animal advocacy movement?

What can social movement theory say to help us address this question?

Roger Yates is a volunteer for the Vegan Information Project, a Dublin-based all-volunteer group that holds weekly 5-6 hours of vegan education direct to the public, along with Vegan Education on the Go (VEGO). His presentation will include a brief description of their work.
