DxE Brighton

Direct Action Organisation

Direct Action Everywhere, Brighton was founded after witnessing the success of Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) in Berkeley, California and hearing about their Roadmap to Animal Liberation which aims for ‘animal liberation in one generation’. Instead of focusing on creating individual vegans and celebrating new vegan products, we focus on making activists and changing social norms through nonviolent direct action.

Why Disrupt?

DxE Brighton have received national press attention for their disruptive actions, including at Steakhouse, Waitrose and Hisbe. This session will ask DxE about their strategies and tactics; what impact they are trying to generate; how they are doing this; and how it links to social justice movements of the past. DxE’s belief in nonviolent civil resistance, social influence and mass mobilization is a different ‘Theory of Change’ to most other vegan organisations. We will ask DxE why they take this approach, review the effectiveness of their actions, and look at the reactions they have received from the vegan community and the general public.

What is a DxE Disruption?

DxE Brighton will be discussing what it means to take part in a disruption, exactly how they put into action the techniques that they are replicating from previous successful social justice movements. What actions DxE Brighton has done so far, varying styles and varying aftermaths, including the resulting media attention, which is a big part of their actions.
